STREET WORKS

STREET WORKS is a competition to create temporary installations that transform underutilised public spaces into vibrant places. An initiative of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) NSW, STREET WORKS invites you to re-imagine spaces in the City of Sydney as dynamic, innovative and sustainable temporary public places that will bring people together in unique ways.

Cities around the world are moving toward installing little interventions that reclaim under-utilised spaces and build creative and engaging places that invite public participation in urban life.

An initiative of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) NSW, STREET WORKS brings this global approach to Sydney.

Landscape architects, architects, artists, designers, musicians, performers, digital media artists and other creative professionals from complementary fields have imagined new city places through proposals for temporary installations that build on the aspirations of City of Sydney's Sustainable Sydney 2030. The places are be dynamic, innovative and sustainable.

A design jury selected five schemes which were installed in late October. Visit Green is Gold, Walk the Line & Beerline until mid January.

PLEASE NOTE: The Customs House exhibition & two sites closed at the end of the Sydney Architecture Festival (Urban Waterfall & Sydney! There's something I've been meaning to tell you...).

Esther Anatolitis, CEO, Melbourne Fringe

Esther Anatolitis is CEO of Melbourne Fringe, Victorias leading organisation for the independent arts, and co-curator of Architecture+Philosophy. Esther has worked on various cross-disciplinary projects across a range of media and locations, with a focus on the identification of interstitial spaces for new work. Her academic background is in European philosophy, and she also holds the postgraduate Zertifikat BauhausDessau (Dessau, Germany) for her work on the architectural Serve City project, for which she was awarded a DAAD Künstlerprogramm residency.Esthers past professional roles span craft and design, literary arts, multicultural arts, publishing and broadcasting, and she has consulted with numerous small-to-medium arts and artist organisations on their strategic planning and programming. Esther has held CEO-level positions with several key Victorian arts organisations, and has served on many boards, including chairing the Arts Industry Council (Victoria) from 2008 to 2010. In 2010 she was a member of the provocateur Surprise City group at the ADC Cities Summit; in 2011, she was a juror for the Urban Realities landscape urbanism design challenge at Melbournes Docklands; and she judged the State of Design Festival's closing night spectacular Iron Designer from 2008 to 2010. Esthers work has been published widely in Australia and overseas, most recently in The Age, Artichoke and RealTime Arts. Across all such involvements is an abiding interest in those special spatial and cultural configurations that are responsible for the emergence of the new.

John Choi, Founding Partner, Choi Ropiha Fighera

John Choi is founding partner of Choi Ropiha Fighera. Established in 2000, the practice is internationally recognised for their competition winning design of TKTS booth at the centre of Times Square in New York. Completed in 2008, the TKTS project has been widely recognised with awards including New York Art Commission Award, D & AD Award Environment Category, Municipal Art Society of New York MASterworks Award, Travel + Leisure Design Award, World Architectural Festival Award, People’s Design Award Nomination, Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Jørn Utzon Award for International Architecture, and has been cited as New York's Building of the Decade. Other projects of note are Macquarie Street Tower, Sydney, Lune de Sang - a private rural estate in the Byron Shire hinterland, Ballast Point which received 2009 AIA NSW Commendation Award and with overall park, 2010 International Waterfront Centre Award, Manly Triangle Redevelopment Competition 1st Prize, Mona Vale Residence which received 2009 Pittwater Sustainability Award, Green Square library which was part of 2008 Venice Biennale Traveling Exhibition, Cranium which received 2009 AHA National Award, and Parramatta Road Strategic Plan. In 2009, the practice received 3 Commendations in the coveted AR Award for Emerging Architecture. He is Adjunct Professor of Architecture at University of Sydney and serves on the board of 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art.

ABOUT The Jury Sacha

Sacha Coles, Chair, AILA STREET WORKS Project Director National Studios Director, Aspect Studios

Sacha Coles is the National Studios Director and founder of ASPECT Studios Sydney. Sacha has been involved in the planning and design of significant award winning public landscapes locally, nationally and internationally, most notably receiving both the ‘Medal’ and the Sir Walter Burley Griffin award for urban design for Pirrama Park. Over the last 12 years as a director of ASPECT Studios, the Sydney studio has received over 30 design awards and he has written and been published widely in relation to the office’s work.Sacha is enthusiastic about advancing the exchange of ideas within landscape architecture and has given talks in Zurich, Beijing, Sydney, Adelaide and New Zealand. He continues to be involved at Universities : UNSW where he is a member of the UNSW’ Faculty of the Built Environment academic advisory board, UTS, University of Adelaide and Victoria University and Wellington as an invited critic for graduating studios. He is the immediate past president of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects NSW and is currently on the executive committee.

Jane Irwin, AILA NSW President

Jane Irwin is a landscape architect with a particular interest and expertise in the field of public domain planning and design. Her design practice - Jane Irwin Landscape Architecture (JILA) has a been involved in a range of Sydney based urban projects, including input to large scale urban design studies; planning, design and documentation of the public domain. Jane is the current president of the NSW chapter of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.

ABOUT The Jury Russell

Russell Lowe, Senior Lecturer in Architecture, University of New South Wales

Russell Lowe lectures in Architectural Computing at the University of New South Wales. He coordinates the first year architectural design studio and teaches in the Masters of Architecture graduation studio. Russell is a member of CAADRIA (Computer Aided Architectural Design in Asia) and has published on the use of computer gaming technology in architectural education and design. Russell’s research centres around the repurposing of computer gaming technology to engage with uses and concepts outside of the entertainment industry. Russell has developed unique insights into opportunities for collaborative thinking that take advantage of the multiple perspectives that new media and computer game environments afford. His prize winning research on architectural space spans from Clinical Simulation to Fine Art Films which have been exhibited worldwide in film festivals as well as private and public art galleries and museums.His work with artist Federico Solmi has been shown at prestigious museums such as the Pompidou Center in Paris, the Drawing Center in New York, National Center for Contemporary Art, Moscow, CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Madrid, Australian Center of the Moving Image, Melbourne, Victoria Memorial Museum, Calcutta, India, Contemporary Art Center of Rouboix, Palazzo Delle Arti, Naples, Palazzo Delle Esposizioni, Rome, Italy.

JURY REPORT

The STREETWORKS design competition organised by AILA NSW received fantastic support with 67 entries being received from both within Australia and internationally. It was rewarding to see such a high level of participation in this competition - and it is no doubt reflective of the interest that designers across the urban design spectrum have for the future of the public domain and its influence on city-making.The brief called for submissions which looked to amuse, intrigue, inspire, and celebrate Sydney’s urban distinctiveness. The temporary schemes were encouraged by the brief to explore the possibilities of free and creative uses of public space in the city, responding to the individual site. Strong emphasis was placed on the level of innovation, sustainability, and the improvement to everyday urban life by design outcomes which embodied the notion of ‘lighter, quicker, cheaper’.The key considerations highlighted in the brief were:• the proposals relevance to City of Sydney’s ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030’• the focus on reuse and recycling of materials• contemplation of both daytime and night time activation• understanding of site scale, benefit, exposure and social outcomes• relationship of sites to each other.The Jury comprised: Jane Irwin - AILA NSW President; John Choi - Founding Partner Choi Ropiha Fighera; Esther Anatolitis - CEO Melbourne Fringe; Russell Lowe – UNSW; and Sacha Coles -ASPECT Studios and chair. The Jury was assisted by Michael Ball from Design Landscapes on issues of constructability. The judging was undertaken over a full day at the UNSW. The Jury was impressed with the diversity, vibrancy and immediacy of the proposals. The strategies deployed were varied in the way they tackled the relatively open brief. Some schemes focused on the physical and spatial dimensions of the public domain, whilst others explored programmatic, historical, and interpretative dimensions of the built environment.As with any cross section of designers, the emphasis from the Jury was diverse and spanned from support for proposals which:- were conservative to ensure viability, especially through 3 month time frame- had elements of the unexpected- activated the space – to do not to just be – schemes which demanded use- had spatial qualities that worked with the chosen sites- commented strongly on the role of public space in the city, and- were transformational.After intensive deliberations the panel chose work which would transform the spatial qualities and offer sophisticated ways of activating each site. The selected projects were those which presented more than one possible program for the site, and indeed would allow for the spontaneous development of new activity - day and night.The 5 winners were:Green is GoldJean-Philippe Ducharne, Hossein Gholami, David Guy, Katie Hubbard, Scott Jackson, UNSW, Sydney, AustraliaBarrack Street, SydneyThis outstanding scheme seeks to transform Barrack Street by creating the structural framework for the development of an urban garden made over time by recycled coffee cups and free garden materials. The scheme relies on participation by city workers to recycle their take away cups, and create the city garden by getting their hands dirty. The Jury was impressed with the reach of this project which seeks to involve surrounding cafes and businesses in the development of the scheme. Beer Line, from Barley to the BottleGlenn McIntosh, Delia Ngay, Luke Wolstencroft, Sydney AustraliaHay Street, SydneyThe Jury selected this scheme principally for its beautiful relationship with its site in Haymarket and its public celebration of the production of beer in the public domain! The long linear installation will develop over the three months to become a productive garden planted with barley, and cultivated to produce beer. The project and the process will be celebrated in a public event on site at the end of the three month period. Walk the LineTimothy Muhlebach, Stephen Tan, Pe Yang Teng, Gerhana Waty, HASSELL, Melbourne, AustraliaGeorge Street, Sydney The Jury unanimously selected this scheme as it connects each of the other sites together by a colourful, on- ground graphic line. The x KM installation weaves and traverse city streets and provides games and joyful diversions along its length. Sydney! There's something I've been meaning to tell you... Jess Miley, Adelaide, AustraliaCustoms House Forecourt, Sydney This has one of the most engaging of the schemes, yet it was not one that the Jury selected in the first cut. What emerged from a further investigation of the proposal was the exciting and yet subversive nature of the idea that the public were invited to comment, question or state their minds in a completely unregulated manner. Comments spanning the profound to profane, would be exhibited each day in one of Sydney’s premium public spaces, Customs House. Urban Waterfall Kristi Park, Seattle, United States of America Redfern Street, RedfernThe Urban Waterfall was one of the most simple and beautiful schemes. Its single purpose is to bring joy to forlorn public spaces by adorning over scaled, multicoloured urban head dress. The scheme frames a strong urban axis from Redfern Street to the train station and as the name suggests will have a dramatic effect as it falls from a great height and moves with the strong winds of the area.There were two Commendations which were hotly debated and that the Jury thought were worthy of recognition:1. Pulp Fiction - WHAT Architects, London, United Kingdom2. Totem Tennis, The Hipster & The Bag Lady – OCULUS, Sydney, Australia.The Jury commends all of the entrants for making the judging process an enjoyable, lively and highly positive one. We would also like to commend AILA NSW for taking the initiative to organise the STREETWORKS competition and showing leadership through design.
